Newborn Photo Session – What to wear

“What should we wear for our newborn session with you?” One of the most asked questions after a client schedules a newborn session with me.

My suggestion is to keep the color palate natural which keeps the focus on the baby vs. bold patterns, color and logos which tends to take the focus off the connection of the family with the newborn baby.

Consider light-colored outfits like creams, beiges, khaki, light pastels like soft greens, blues, or peach. I recommend staying away from black because of the very strong contrast, grey being a better option.

Moms feel most comfortable in flowy dresses, soft tops or tanks in neutral colors. Some moms opt for longer sleeves, three-quarter tops or a cardigan to layer with a tank top or dress. These options also work great for big sisters.

Dads and big brothers look best in a simple t-shirts, polos, or button-down shirts without a busy pattern or logos. I suggest to void anything that will wrinkle easily or cling to the body.

You will have a choice for the baby. I can wrap the baby in a color that will coordinate with your outfits or baby can be naked wrapped in the parent’s hands and arms. I have wraps in all colors available to use. If parents opt for a store bought outfit, I suggest to make sure it fits well, not too big or too small and without any bold colors and patterns.

I would also like to add that trimming your nails and not wearing bright nail-polish is always suggested.

I hope this is helpful as you get ready for your newborn session with me.

Newborn Session – What to bring

You have scheduled your newborn photo session. Now you are ready to leave, but you are not so sure on what you will need during to your photo session. Let me show you what I share my clients.

I always send a text message the day before to confirm the time and day, and also to share a helpful checkoff list. It can be extremely overwhelming, especially for first time parents, to leave the house most of the time as their first outing after coming home from the hospital.

So what will you need to bring with you to your newborn baby’s session?

  • Any special item that you would like to incorporate. For example, in the images below, the yellow blanket and the little bumble bee outfit were brought my mom. They were special because the blanket was made by grandma and the little outfit was a gift given at her “what will it BEE?” themed baby shower. I was happy to include those items. Everything else used were provided by me. ——BUT what if you don’t have anything. No problem. Over the past 14 years, I’ve collected lots of props, accessories, outfits, and wraps. ——BUT how do I, the photographer, know what to use? I have all my clients fill out a questionnaire, so I will have all information on what to pull out of my closet and off my shelves.
  • Extra bottles if the baby is bottle-fed.
  • Food/snacks/drinks for the parents/siblings in case the session lasts longer.
  • Pacifier. Even if the baby doesn’t use one yet, it is super helpful in the transitioning between poses. The baby will not get used to it if he/she doesn’t use one yet in the 1-2 hr time, but it can help sooth the baby and make a difference in the time spent during the session.
  • Clothing for parents and/or siblings if they are taking part in the session. I always suggest to bring the clothing with you and wear comfortable clothes to hang out in the studio and for traveling.
